Understanding Boulder Valley School District's Open Enrollment Process: A Guide for Parents

If you're a parent in Boulder, Colorado or a parent looking to move to the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) - here is your need to know guide for understanding the Boulder Valley School District open enrollment process.

Open enrollment allows families to apply for schools outside their designated neighborhood schools, giving children access to more options

based on their needs and interests.

However, the process can seem daunting, especially for first-timers. Here’s a helpful guide to navigate open enrollment and ensure your child is prepared for the upcoming school year.

What Is Open Enrollment in BVSD?

Open enrollment in the Boulder Valley School District gives families the flexibility to choose a school outside their assigned boundary school. This can be especially valuable if you're looking for a program or environment better suited to your child’s academic or extracurricular needs. Open enrollment is available for all students, from kindergarten through high school.

Important Dates for the 2024-2025 School Year

Mark your calendar!

BVSD’s open enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year typically opens in November and closes in early January.

Specific dates for this year’s window are:

- Application Opens: November 1, 2024

- Application Deadline: Early January 2025

  • Be sure to submit your application within this window, as late applications may not be considered until all on-time applicants have been placed.

  • If you want to participate in the lottery, apply between November 1 through the beginning of January (date to be determined).

  • Open Enrollment applications submitted before the deadline are processed through a lottery, not "first come, first served."  Any application submitted during this time will be entered into the lottery; special preference is not given to those that apply on the first day.

Steps to Take for Open Enrollment

1. Research Schools Early

Begin researching potential schools in the BVSD now. Consider academic programs, extracurriculars, transportation logistics, and school culture. Check out the BVSD School Finder Tool on their website to explore different schools and what they offer.

2. Attend School Tours and Information Sessions

Many schools host open houses or virtual tours in the fall, which can help you get a feel for the campus and meet staff. This is a great opportunity to ask about curriculum, school culture, and any specific programs your child may be interested in, such as STEM or arts-based education.

3. Submit Your Application

Applications for open enrollment are submitted online through the BVSD portal. Make sure you create an account ahead of time and gather any necessary documentation. You’ll need to rank your school choices, so it’s essential to have a prioritized list ready.

4. Understand the Lottery System

If more students apply to a school than there are spots available, BVSD uses a lottery system to determine placement. It’s important to understand that even though you may apply, there’s no guarantee of acceptance. However, BVSD gives priority to students who have siblings already attending the desired school or have other unique circumstances.

5. Prepare for Acceptance or Waitlist Notifications

After applications are submitted, notifications typically go out by late January or early February. If your child is accepted, you’ll need to confirm their enrollment. If they’re waitlisted, don’t worry—families often change plans, so spots may still open up over the next few months.

Benefits of Open Enrollment in Boulder Valley Schools

BVSD offers excellent educational opportunities, and open enrollment allows your child to access specialized programs or attend schools with a teaching philosophy that aligns with your values. Whether you’re interested in language immersion programs, International Baccalaureate (IB) schools, or schools with a focus on the arts or sciences, open enrollment can open doors to a world of possibilities for your child.

What to Do Next

The open enrollment process can be competitive, but with the right preparation, you can ensure your child has the best chance of getting into your preferred schools. Start your research early, visit schools, and stay organized with application deadlines.
