How to Winterize Your Lawn for Great Spring Results

If you are putting your home on the market next spring,

use these tips to have your lawn looking its best.

It really makes a difference!

Having a healthy lawn goes beyond just aesthetics; it plays a crucial role in preventing the growth of opportunistic weeds. A well-maintained lawn not only enhances the overall look of your property but also serves as a natural barrier against unwanted plants that can quickly take over if given the chance. This is particularly important when considering selling your home, as curb appeal is a key factor in attracting potential buyers. A lush, green lawn creates a positive first impression, signaling to visitors that the property is well-cared for and inviting.

Here are some tips for fall lawn care. Most of these are low cost and can be done by the homeowner:

  • Aerate

Remove soil plugs to allow water and nutrients to reach the grass roots. This is especially helpful in the fall because it helps the soil absorb moisture before the ground freezes. Do this step before fertilizing.

  • Fertilize

Fertilize early in the fall to help your grass grow strong roots that can last through winter. You can try spreading 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet around Labor Day.

  • Add soil to uneven areas

Grab a few bags of soil to fill in uneven areas. Pour the soil on the lawn and rake until even and grass is unburied. This is a great way to add more nutrients to the earth and give a great foundation for seed.

  • Add Seed

Adding grass seed involves spreading seed across your lawn to repair thin or bare areas.  Look for seed that works best in your climate. For Colorado, look for drought tolerant grass varieties.

  • Mow

Mow your lawn every week to help it prepare for winter. Mowing forces growth to the roots instead of the grass blades, and it also helps your grass absorb nutrients. You can also look for a mower that mulches as you go and make sure the blade is sharp.

  • Rake leaves

Rake dry leaves every few days and wet leaves as soon as possible. A layer of leaves on your lawn can be unhealthy for your grass.

  • Weed control

Fall is a good time to use weed killer because weeds are stronger at absorbing nutrients and are less likely to return in the spring if you treat them now.

  • Test your soil

Checking your soil during harvest time can help you identify any applications or conditioning that your lawn might need before winter.

I personally use Organa-lawn for my property. Their products are organic & very reasonably priced. We do the The Ultimate Lawn Care Program which includes is the 5-applications weed control and fertilizer. The first application starts in March with the last application in October. All 5 applications include organic weed controls and fertilizers.
